The flowers of Alleghany viburnum (Viburnum x
rhytidophylloides 'Alleghany' ) are beautiful to look at but
not such a treat to smell. Their scent attracts some of the less
glamorous pollinators, such as flies that will afterward seek
similar odors to find the dead things they prefer for
egg-laying.
