 Hens and chicks are cool - in this case, downright cold. Evergreen, tough, colorful and able to grow in vary thin soil such as rocky alpine rubble or on a roof. Their scientific name is a nod to this historic use on roofs - Sempervivum tectorum means ever living plant of the roof.
