Witchhazel6645

Spring witchhazel, a.k.a. vernal witchhazel: Hamamelis x mollis. It blooms very early, even during winter thaws. When it waits to flower after freezes end in very early spring -- March in our neck of the woods -- the blooms may last many weeks. They aren't frozen out nor do they finish quickly since pollinators are scarce when it's still cold. (Flowers' petals fall once sufficient pollen has been deposited by pollinators and seed production begins. That's why the flowers of midsummer blooming plants are often fleeting beauties.)
