Few trees are so reliable in color and intensity as red maples
(Acer rubrum), which are red to re-orange in fall. Their
smooth light gray bark is also a great contrast to the deep red
fall color (and the bright red of its spring flowers), so some red
maple selections were chosen for both leaf and bark color (lighter
than normal bark color).
Some hybrid red-silver maples (bred and selected for the
reliable fall color and harder wood of the red maple, and faste
growth of the silver) vary into the orange and even yellow
range.
Spring color
Know for fall color the red maple often has oustanding spring
color when it is in bloom. The flowers very from a coppery red to
dark red depending on the plant.
