Beech muffled by no-die boxwood

Whyizzit, that even though every other bush we cut to "rejuvenate" dies, the bush that we WANT to die, grows back?!

Hi Janet and Steven. Happy New Year. I purchased a home with boxwood trees closely circling a Beechwood tree. They looked ridicules (trimmed flat on top to remind us of a "mustache" around the tree). So my husband started hacking and removed the boxwoods down to the roots. That was in the summer. Now they are starting to come back. Question: how do we permanently remove the ring of boxwoods, without harming the Beechwood tree? - N.T. -
