One of our favorite "double up" combinations is this Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum). As the bluebells go dormant the ferns begin growing. They eventually cover the browning foliage of the bluebells and the gardener dosen't have to cut them down.
