One of our favorite "double up" combinations is this Virginia
bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and
Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum
var. pictum). As the bluebells go dormant the ferns begin
growing. They eventually cover the browning foliage of the
bluebells and the gardener dosen't have to cut them
down.
