Coleus3197

Coleus foliage color.

All the rage in Victorian times as houseplants and as garden bedding, Coleus then fell out of favor for much of a century. It made a big comeback in the last part of the 1900's, just in time to be scrutinized by the new generation of plant taxonomists who examine plants' genes to determine what's related to what. So Coleus is no longer the plant's official name. Some of the plants formerly known as Coleus belong now to the genus Plectranthus. Most became Solenostemon, primarily Solenostemon scutellarioides. It's a big change from Coleus blumei! Such a shame, that modern name changes so rarely give us an easier plant name.
