These poplars are growing in the sand of the Sleeping Bear Dunes
along the shore of Lake Michigan. They survive shifting sands and
windy conditions. In fact, these "trees" are probably just two
individual trees which have been buried so deep as the dunes
advance that each main limb not only looks like a separate tree but
has rooted and could live as an independent tree.
