The American Conifer Society held its 2012 annual conference in southeast Michigan. The highlight of the entire meeting for many if not all of the attendees was a visit to The Harper Collection of Dwarf & Rare Conifers at MSU's Hidden Lake Gardens. Seeing this collection is a truly wonderful way to get to know dwarf conifers. In that collection they are allowed to grow as they will, as required in the guidelines set by Chub Harper in 1981 when he donated the plants and endowed their care. Chub, who passed away in 2009, was a mentor to many of the ACS attendees, so visiting this collection revived memories of a beloved man.
