The rocks in the The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden on Staten Island were selected as carefully as the plants in the design. Water-weathered rocks have been prized in Chinese garden design for centuries, with special honor given to those from Lake Tai. Boulders were sometimes placed into that fabled lake by a person as a gift for a great grandchild who might claim it once it weathered.
