When the cold flattens a hosta, it's time to cut the plant to the ground. Of course you can simply leave the leaves and let next year's plant cover them... but many gardeners still favor tidying up.

If you will cut, act in fall while the stems are still firm and clip more easily than in their mushy spring state. 

There are other reasons to do your garden clean-up in fall rather than wait until spring. Chief among them: We are every one of us younger and in better shape each fall then we will be next spring.
