Traditional vegetable gardens are laid out in rows. In the intensive-cropping form known as Square Foot Gardening, a raised bed is laid out ias you see here. (Check Mel Bartholomew's books on the subject.) You can reach the bed from all sides so there's no need for a path or walking on the soil. Thus the soil remains airy and light, and you can grow vegetables in very close ranks for a higher yield per squre foot.
