This trough garden was created because, "Nothing would grow well in this area." The gardener was stumped as to the cause of the failures until the homeowner said, 'that area was used for dumping the kitchen sink and anything else -- it all went off the porch and into this bed for at least 40 years.' Rather than replace the soil, the gardener created a garden above ground in troughs made of the concrete-peat mix called hypertufa.
