...we collect them as ardently as plants!
The Internet is stupendous. to be able to search a thousand, a
hundred thousand references at once, to search using a filter so
you can scan photos rather than words. Wow. We who have researched
plants and trouble since the dark ages pre-search-engine, truly
appreciate the power of the Internet.
However, we will always love our library more. To fall asleep
with a book, ah that's heaven.
Anyway, as we mention them in other places on the site, we'll
post here the books we use and love. Eventually we'll post the
complete bibliography from our Growing Concerns books, as
we get their material posted on the site. Then this will be a
library of titles.
Some of these are out of print. Support local book stores and
used book cooperatives like abebooks.com by picking these up when
you see them. Some -- you'll know which ones by our description --
are already so precious that if you find a copy you may be able to
re-sell it to us to replace a copy we've worn through.
Books we find indispensable in the category of

Trees, Shrubs and Vines in the Landscape,
Harris, Richard W., Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood, NJ

copies, from edition 3 through 5. No color photos in the book
(black and white) but the organization and practicality are
treasures. Look up a plant name to read through first the diseases
common to that plant -- in order not by name but by likelihood
you'll ever see it -- then insects, then physiologic problems. Down
to earth practical control advice that spans the
chemical-to-organic world and makes no bones about things that are
"not serious enough to warrant control."
Diseases of Trees and Shrubs, Johnson,
Warren T., Lyon, Howard H., & Sinclair, Wayne A.,Cornell
University Press, Ithaca, New York (1987)
Insects that Feed on Trees and Shrubs,
Johnson, Warren T. & Lyon, Howard H., Cornell University Press,
Ithaca, New York (1988) Indispensable to us for researching insects
that cause trouble in the ornamental garden. Packed with color
photos and arranged by category of insect so if you have an inkling
it's a caterpillar at work you can browse that section, etc. A
university textbook, not common in retail bookstores
